2569_16_blog_truckerdatabase-1Two government agencies are combining their powers for a proposal that would equip heavy-duty vehicles with devices that would limit speeds on U.S. roadways. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), along with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FCMSA) said that this safety initiative could save lives and more than $1 billion in fuel costs each year.

The final details of the proposal have yet to be set in stone, but the idea is that the speed limiters would be installed on every newly manufactured trucks, buses and multipurpose passenger vehicles that have a gross weight rating more that 26,000 pounds. The proposal also outlines the benefits in setting the maximum speed at 60, 65 and 68 miles per hour.

Trucking company operators will be tasked with maintaining the speed limiting devices for the life of the vehicle.
